Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that the PM told a cabinet meeting on Sunday night that “there is and will be no change” in the status quo of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, reports Al Jazeera.
He said government ministers must not go to the compound – which is called Temple Mount in Israel – without prior approval through the PM’s military secretary.
This comes after far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir led a provocative visit to the compound last month with armed guards and Jewish settlers who performed Talmudic rituals at the holy Muslim site. The minister has also backed building a synagogue on the compound.
