AL-JaPa meeting held over holding polls peacefully: Chunnu

Jatiya Party (Japa) Secretary General Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Thursday said the meeting between Awami League (AL) and Jatiya Party (JaPa) was held to ensure holding the upcoming general elections peacefully.

"Various issues were discussed in the meeting including ensuring the conduct of 12th Parliament elections in a peaceful and orderly environment," he said while briefing the journalists at the JaPa Chairman's Banani Office in the capital.

The meeting was held on Wednesday in a city hotel.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader led the meeting while AL Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim were present, among others.

Noting that there was no discussion with AL about the seat-sharing, Chunnu said a cordial discussion was held between the two parties on holding peaceful elections.

He added that Awami League shown the spirit of holding a fair election on January 7, 2024.

About the general polls, he further said AL leaders discussed about taking necessary steps for ensuring safe presence of the voters at the polling stations and the exercise of the voting rights of the voters.

Expressing his hope that the Jatiya Party will come to power if there is a fair election, he said that currently the anti-Awami League votes are more than the Awami League.

He informed journalists that JaPa will take part in the elections without alliance. The nominations of nine JaPa-candidates have been cancelled, he added.

"They will appeal to the Election Commission," he said and hoped that many of them will get back their candidature.
