Coastal areas experiencing rain, tidal surge due to influence of Remal

The coastal district of Khulna is experiencing gusty wind and rain due to the influence of cyclonic storm Remal that is likely to make landfall in the country soon.

Due to the impact of Remal, the Sundarbans have been flooded by the wind driven surge of 4 feet above normal tide.

Harun-or-Rashid, in-charge of Mongla Weather Observatory, said the cyclonic storm may cross the Sundarbans and Mongla coastal areas between 6 pm to 9 pm tonight.

The maritime port of Mongla has been advised to keep hoisted great danger signal no 10.

Hawladar Azad Kabir, officer-in-charge of Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre of east Sundarbans, said the only wildlife breeding centre has been flooded and if the rains continue the tidal surge may increase.

Leave of all officials and forest guards under Sundarbans has been canceled and all guards at the risky camp of the Forest Department were evacuated.

Operation of all kinds of vessels on the Mongla River was suspended, said Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nishat Tamanna.

However, the ferry services were kept operational in case of emergency.

According to the latest bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the severe cyclonic storm Remal over northwest Bay and adjoining area is expected to make landfall between West Bengal's Sagar Island and Bangladesh's Khepupara from 6 pm today (Sunday).

Under the peripheral effect of the severe cyclone, rains with gusty or squally wind have started in coastal regions of Bangladesh.
