10 killed in cyclone Remal, 1.5 lakh houses damaged

At least 10 people were killed in the severe cyclonic storm Remal that lashed the southern coasts of the country on Sunday night.

“Due to the cyclone, more than 37 lakh people have been affected in 19 districts of the country, while 10 people have died so far,” State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibbur Rahman said at a press conference at the secretariat in Dhaka on Monday, Daily Sun reported.

Remal damaged over 1.50 lakh houses, wreaking havoc in 107 upazilas and 917 municipalities and unions of 19 districts, he said.

“Instructions have also been given to the ministries concerned to assess the damage caused by cyclonic storm,” the state minister added.

The government has already cancelled the leave of officials and employees of all ministries, divisions, and departments along with city corporations and municipalities to tackle the aftermath of the severe cyclonic storm.

Earlier on Sunday, Bangladesh evacuated more than 800,000 people from the coastal regions ahead of the landfall of the cyclone as the Met office issued Great Danger Signal 10 for the maritime ports of Payra and Mongla, and Great Danger Signal 9 for the maritime ports of Cox's Bazar and Chattogram.

On Monday, the Met office lowered the danger signal and issued local cautionary signal three for the maritime ports in Chattogram, Mongla and Payra.
