Sheikh Hasina to be brought country to face trial: Chief Prosecutor

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Advocate Mohammad Tazul Islam said on Sunday that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would be brought to the country for trial.

"Sheikh Hasina, the main accused in most of the cases filed on charges of genocide (during the anti-discrimination student movement), will be brought back to the country and face trial in the tribunal," he said.

Tazul Islam came up with the assertion while answering the questions of journalists at the ICT in the capital.

He said Bangladesh has a criminal extradition treaty with India. Under the agreement, the process of bringing back Sheikh Hasina will be started.

The chief prosecutor said the ICT will be reformed within a very short time and trial of the genocide will be started very soon.

Earlier on Saturday, Supreme Court Advocate Mohammad Tazul Islam has been appointed as the chief prosecutor with the status of Attorney General to conduct the cases of ICT.

Four prosecutors were also appointed according to section 7 of the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, 1973, said a gazette notification by the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.
